Islam and Freedom of Conscience
James Q. Madison has a great article up on City Journal about the struggles of Christianity to seperate Church and State, and how Islam is recapitulating some of that history.
The kicker is the last line, where he states:
"If the Middle East is to encounter and not merely resist modernity, it would best if it did this before it runs out of oil."
I think he hits the nail right on the head, while there is still oil in the Middle East, income from that resource can be used to modernize Arab nations, or to build more religious schools. And when the oil money runs out in the next few decades, if the nations of the Middle East haven't made fundamental changes by then, we in the West will probably care as little about them as we do currently about Africa: Not a Lot.
